Keep Your Fire Burning

For years, I owned a huge sorrel stallion by the name of Duz Bar, who over time, had become “barn sour”. In other words he was content to eat, sleep and hang out in his portion of the stable.  Even though Duz was not my favorite horse to ride, I often took him out for a trail ride.  As we left the barn, he would just poke along. I would have to constantly encourage him to “step out” by using the reins on his rear end or by a little touch of the spurs.

Duz was a smart old horse though and had an uncanny sense of direction.  The moment we turned around and headed for home, a metamorphosis took place and Duz turned into a “Kentucky race horse”.  If I had let him, we would have reached speeds of over 200 miles per hour. (It was always fun to take a friend on a trail ride and let them ride Duz…some are still missing!)  When Duz turned the corner and headed for home, he became energized and focused.  He know where he was going (Confidence), how he was going to get there (Plan), but most importantly, he became energized because he “Re-Focused.  He had one purpose and one vision…get back to the stable.

As Real Estate Professionals, it is hard to be truly enthusiastic at times and, like the pink energizer bunny, always full of life.  How can we find the energy to consistently maintain true enthusiasm in one of the toughest occupations known to man?  Take the time to answer these questions:

1) Who are you (self image)?  2)  What do you do (Profession)?  3)  How well do you do it?  4)  How do you know?

These questions will determine your values and assist you in re-focusing your own vision.  By spending some time alone and dealing with these questions, you will become re-energized, re-focused and enthusiastic about your career and personal life.

What are you doing, other than working very hard, to keep your “Fire burning”?

Buy High – Sell Low

As many of you know, Linda & I like to buy our real estate high and sell low!!  When the market started to fall, Linda said to me, “As long as you have been in the real estate industry, I thought you would have known more about it”!!! (Referring, of course, to the ups and downs of property value.)

Well, I have been in the business for over 40 years and have seen the real estate market slide numerous times.  The market WILL COME BACK!  When real estate sales are great, we real estate agents believe it will last forever and spend money accordingly.  When sales are down, we believe it will continue to fall – we need to STOP IT!  CHANGE OUR BUSINESS MODEL!  A “Down market” prunes out the real estate agent who doesn’t want to change and those who don’t want to work hard!

Another advantage to the adjusting of our property value is that if pricing would have continued to climb, our children and grandchildren would not have been able to afford to buy homes.

Real estate agents are the greatest entrepreneurs known to man – let’s not become victims and react – we must be proactive.

Talk to you soon.
